CHAPTER III

THE REVOLUTIONARY
On Randall's Island, Russian asylum seeker Marko M. had made a name for himself as a "revolutionary" – vehemently protesting what he saw as unfair treatment at the shelter.

It did not take long for him to be banned from the tents. But he did stay on the lawn in front of them.

BLACKLISTED

After the winter, Marko is still called a “revolutionary,” but by different people and in a different part of town.

Marko was blacklisted from the shelter system because, he says, he spoke out against inhumane guards and mismanagement at a shelter. He now lives in a community garden in Brooklyn, the Bushwick City Farm.

The garden has become a hub where he and other migrants wait, work and sleep.

THE SHOE CLEANER
In April, Marko decided to take one of the free flights offered to migrants who want to leave New York City.

Shortly after his arrival in Chicago he became unreachable for several weeks. This is one of the last messages Marko sent:

It's not good here.

No friends, no work, no bed, no money to come back.

I made a mistake and spent this free ticket for nothing.

It is so cold here, I sleep under a tree at Lake Michigan and in trains.

A deep, depressing feeling.
